Through the writings of Jacques de Vitry, a famed 13th-century preacher and Bishop of St Jean d’Acre in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, Dr. Vandeburie will explore the medieval European views on Islam at the time of the crusades. This talk will shed light on the way in which Western Christians perceived the sharing of sacred shrines with Muslims, and how an increased knowledge of Islam influenced Church policy, approaches to mission, and ideas of conversion.
